It's Not Just Cloud: How FinOps Tools and Practices Can Help Control Licensing and Other Costs - Charlie Wolfe (Expedia Group)
FinOps helps decentralize data-informed cost-focused decision-making at all levels, but cloud costs aren’t the only type of cost that needs application-owner-level focus. When creating chargebacks amongst Expedia’s platforms, we realized that some volume-based licenses are tied directly to cloud use rates while others are based on proprietary processing units similar to cloud providers. Incorporating those licenses into our Cloud Transparency Toolkit allows us to more accurately attribute costs to our applications, spotlight license usage efficiency, and bring more costs into our cost-to-value optimization culture.

Driving Intelligent Investment Decisions with Unit Economics and Product Profitability - Marisa Banigan (Apptio Cloudability) & David Van Hoven (HERE Technologies)
FinOps practitioners are pushing the boundaries of “what’s possible” in cloud financial management, shifting their focus beyond foundational cost management to advanced FinOps concepts like cloud cost efficiency, driving ROI and measuring product profitability. Unit economics provides a way for practitioners to measure these elements, enabling practitioners to articulate the value of their cloud investments to stakeholders across their respective companies.  In this session we will explore how specific metrics can cut through cloud cost complexity to guide engineering priorities and drive intelligent investment decisions by:
  • Reliably measuring the full cost of each relevant service and application
  • Establishing good KPIs and business metrics to represent business value
  • Using unit cost measurements as a gauge of relative efficiency to drive action
  • Applying unit economics principles and margin analysis for above-the-line costs

Beyond Visibility - Measuring FinOps Program Performance - Lee Ditiangkin (Nvidia) & Jon Thompson (Virtasant)
FinOps is about ensuring that your organization generates the most value out of your cloud technology investment, whether it is public or private cloud. The goal is to drive innovation and create value for the organization while minimizing wasted spend and removing administrative barriers. But how do you effectively measure FinOps progress?

Learn how two FinOps leaders, one a technologist & mathematician (Jon Thompson, CTO Virtasant) and the other a finance & product engineering leader (Lee Ditiangkin, Director of Product Nvidia) absorb, analyze, and compute statistics that guide their decision-making, both having worked with teams to optimize billions of dollars of cloud spend across public and private clouds. Providing spend visibility and basic metrics like change in spend, utilization, discount rates, and reservation/SP coverage is important, but to the people actually in charge of infrastructure provisioning (your engineering team), they don’t really give them a clear, objective view of how efficient and effective their cloud spend is.

Attendees will learn how to measure the effectiveness of their FinOps programs and focus their FinOps investments (people, technology, process) on activities that drive real value. Go beyond telling teams how much they are spending and asking them to spend less, but provide objective measures of team and FinOps program performance.

Three Takeaways:
1) The importance of clear, objective measures to guide your FinOps program and empower teams to take action
2) Why two key measures are critical to guiding team focus and FinOps program execution: Cloud Efficiency and Program ROI
3) How to use these two key measures along with other objectives, and business-aligned metrics to guide FinOps program success

Effective Savings Rate – The Ultimate Rate Optimization Metric - Eric Mulartrick (Boomi) & Erik Carlin (ProsperOps)
Many FinOps practitioners struggle with understanding their return on investment from commitment-based discounts (Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Committed Use Discounts, etc.). It’s common to optimize for input metrics—utilization and coverage—which are not unimportant, but alone do not address the fundamental question of savings performance. Worse, there are multiple scenarios where optimizing for coverage and utilization can produce inferior savings outcomes.

Come learn about Effective Savings Rate (ESR), a standard, cloud agnostic way to measure the efficacy of your rate optimization efforts. ESR is a great top level KPI to track and share with your CFO and finance team! Erik (ProsperOps) and Eric (Boomi) will walk through how to measure your ESR, maximize your savings with ESR, and share insights around industry ESR benchmarks.

Attendees will walk away with practical examples of how to calculate ESR, plus guided instruction and a template for determining their own ESR on AWS.

3 Takeaways:
  1. Challenges with calculating and tracking savings performance from commitment-based discounts
  2. Why optimizing for ESR is valuable above and beyond tracking utilization and coverage

In 2022, our business unit set out to comprehensively allocate our cloud costs to customer facing products. The end result was that teams began to take proactive steps to reduce their chargebacks, we unlocked a key door on our journey towards unit economics, and uncovered better understanding of cloud costs.

Driving a FinOps Culture Change via Planning - Kevin Wehde & Darla Washington (American Airlines)
The proposal from American Airlines relates to driving a FinOps Cultural Change, this change is driven by the intersection of planning activities, workload onboarding and forecasting through the use of an internal tool. The American Airlines has created and refined a migration tracker that provides insights into application teams migration plans on a 1, 3 and 5 year basis. These plans are leveraged in several areas:

• Planning our year over year run budgets for both cloud and on-prem application infrastructure. This will allow for a better portfolio TCO view within IT. • Planning our current year cloud growth budgets.

• Contract negotiation, the data provides the baseline for migrations, potential spend and timing. This data was the foundation of multi year agreement with a major cloud provider.

• On Prem Datacenter planning, allowing AA to plan for capacity needs.

FinOps in Government Fireside Chat : Challenges and Solutions to Optimize Cloud$/Citizen - Melvin Brown ll & Al Himler (OPM - US Office of Personnel Management)
1. Technology decisions are much easier to make than underlying policy, governance, and workforce decisions which are more challenging in government than commercial organizations

2. Procurement or policy or compliance blockers can make FinOps more challenging in government (and other regulated industries), but there are approaches to overcome these challenges

3. Establishing both a real-time optimization capability (FinOps Team) and a scorecard for effective cloud use can be combined to provide the incentive for agencies to adopt FinOps despite a lack of a "profit motive" present in commercial organizations.

Multi-Cloud Waste Visualization and Automated Clean Up at Adobe - Ken Anderson & Matthew Kruse (Adobe)
Managing cloud efficiency is a balancing act between recognizing an opportunity, informing those responsible, and ultimately executing a change. Roadmaps, new features, and competing engineering priorities are all part of the equation when it comes to prioritizing efficiency work.

Cloud inefficiencies can generally be categorized into two buckets (waste that needs to be addressed by the owning application experts and waste that can be addressed without direct application knowledge) each requiring a slightly different strategy to remediate.

Come and learn how Adobe identifies cloud waste, informs resource owners, and ultimately drives cost savings with automation.

FinOps in the Federal Space: VA’s Journey to Cloud Optimization - Sue Speck (Department of Veterans Affairs)
We propose to share the journey to cloud optimization of the Department of Veterans Affairs, one of the earliest federal agency adopters of cloud technologies, highlighting both the successes and challenges experienced since its cloud strategy was developed in 2017 and then in 2018 when the Enterprise Cloud Solutions Office (ECSO) was established. We intend to highlight that journey and what we have learned implementing an effective FinOps strategy within the context of the second largest federal government agency. VA is a massive and complex organization, consisting of three major components charged with running over 170 hospitals and 1000 outpatient sites, processing the benefit claims of nearly 20 million Veterans, and overseeing 155 Veterans’ cemeteries, respectively. This type of scale means two critical things: 1) the agency must remain committed to pursuing its cloud migration and FinOps strategies and 2) many federal agencies continue to look to the VA for lessons learned. ECSO focused from the beginning on cost savings and reserved instances, but it has taken time for VA’s FinOps strategy to stabilize and mature.

FinOps and IT Asset Management: Collaboration is Key to Your Optimization Goals - Brian Adler & Jeremy Chaplin (Flexera)
The session will be a deep dive into where the existing discipline of ITAM and the (relatively) new discipline of FinOps intersect.  The intent will be to illustrate to the audience that even if you have reached the “run” phase in all aspects of the FinOps Framework as it relates to your cloud infrastructure, there are still potentially significant cost savings (or cost avoidance) that can be achieved by incorporating ITAM data into the FinOps process.  Real-world examples will be shared (with anonymized customers and vendors) that will illustrate that a FinOps tool isolated from ITAM information can make poor financial decisions that can actually create more costs than they save.  The collaborative steps that can (and should) be taken between FinOps and ITAM practitioners will be described, with a focus on how to align the two disciplines’ operating frameworks.

Rolling Forecast: Benefits, Challenges, Best practice, and Implementation - Vik Saluja (Mastercard)
As cloud adoption grows and expands, so does the need for a reliable method of managing finances.  As a result for this visibility. most companies utilize a traditional budgeting process to track actuals vs forecast.  Unfortunately this process fall short as it does not react to what is happening during forecast period, encourages false incentives to meet targets, works within specific timelines, etc.

Rolling forecast address some of these challenges and requires rolling planning (re-calibration) of forecast on monthly or quarterly basis.

AutoMagic App Budgets - James Barney (Ally Financial)
Ally AutoMagic App Budgets allow our application teams to build freely in AWS while the central cloud platform team can monitor and manage costs all in one place.

The culmination of several years of work, AutoMagic App Budgets are based off core FinOps principles such as Tagging Policies, Showback Models, and Data Injestion and Normalization.

Despite doubling our cloud footprint last year, our overall cloud costs have remained flat, 9/10 of our legacy accounts have been closed, and we've been able to drive essentialism onto our individual development teams in a scalable way.

Ultimately our AutoMagic App Budgets allow us to drive best-practices conversations and allow application teams to measure their improvement over time.

Shifting FinOps Left in the Development Cycle - Lucas Paratore (VMware) & Usha Ganesh (Global Payments)
As FinOps best practices take hold in organizations throughout the world, practitioners and vendors are coming together to shape higher standards for cloud cost management. Just as quality and security controls have “shifted left” in the development cycle, FinOps professionals are looking for the best ways to build cost controls into the process before an application gets to production.

Decisions are made during the design process that have serious cost implications for businesses. This session highlights questions you should ask during the design and development phase to ensure the optimal balance of performance and cost, including:

· How can cost efficiency as a metric be incorporated as part of the architectural design?

· Based on the expected usage pattern, should I architect for on-demand, spot, or instances covered by Reserved Instances and Savings Plans?

· What governance and/or controls can be placed to ensure awareness of cost at all phases?

Join this session to learn why it’s better to provide usage and cost data to developers before deployment, what questions developers should be considering as they design and develop new code, and how businesses can motivate application owners to consider cost through a combination of timely reporting and automated governance.

GreenOps in Action - Paul Guarino (Fidelity)
When the cloud was born, we were introduced to the concept of a currency-based cost for renting an instance at a CSP.  Then things got complicated and FinOps was created to help with that complexity.  In addition, there has always been a less clear negative externality of using the cloud.  That is, the greenhouse gases (also known as "carbon") associated with the purchase of that instance. This carbon is emitted to Earth's atmosphere where it lingers, contributing to global warming.

Although we cannot each install power meters at the data centers of our CSPs to measure the energy/carbon cost of renting resources, we can use available information to create a model for this. Once we have reasonable values for this previously hidden cost, we can then apply many of the FinOps principals and methods. We envision integration of energy and carbon metrics with existing FinOps and DevOps tools. This integration will enable enterprises to understand, analyze, and drive smart tradeoffs and initiatives for efficiency on both cost fronts: dollars and carbon.

Run then Crawl: Speed running FinOps Maturity at a New and Less Mature Organization - Stephen Arthur (Coinbase)
Changing jobs can be a great step forward in career progression, but can result in a step backwards in organizational FinOps maturity! Moving from a “Run” to a “Crawl” organization can be a jarring experience, but provides its own type of opportunity. In your new role, your previous experience means you will be required to be both the champion of the FinOps vision and someone who can deliver short-term wins along the way.

This talk will cover the sequence of capabilities Coinbase built to find and ship immediate cost reductions, while still investing in long-term directional alignment with FinOps Framework and “Run” level maturity targets.

I’ll compare side-by-side crawl and run examples for key capabilities that we needed - using my past experience as a guide - and how we built MVP equivalents to move urgently and deliver short-term cost savings ASAP.

When Automation is too Late (or How I Learned to Love the Deploy Script) - Eric Mulartrick & Will Carlson (Boomi, Inc.)
Presentation begins with standard bit about me and my company, then migrates from that into an overview of a specific challenge we face in the form of ancient (by cloud standards) EBS volumes which we as an organization could benefit from upgrading to more cost/performant volume types. I then discuss real-world costs associated with these ancient or over-provisioned EBS volumes followed by a screen capture of an automation decision tree with 30+ steps to evaluate each migration opportunity.

Dive into some of the challenges presented by the different decision paths, then discuss why it is simply too much to manage with so many teams and AWS accounts involved.

Finally: Move on to present the solution - rather than after-the fact automation to move all volumes, incorporate migration directly into the build process; how we standardized volume types with a single library that could be imported into any build process, including supporting different options for sandbox/production environments so we can take a phased approach to migration.

Budgeting in the Cloud: From Confusion to Clarity - Brad Payne & Dave Chodos (PointClickCare)
In this presentation, we will describe how a fledgling FinOps team transformed the hosting budget process to deliver transparency and accountability across the organization.

The team built tools, models, and processes that ultimately empowered engineering teams to own their budgets, which are set and tracked on a per-product basis.

Moving away from a traditional budget structure that didn't account for the vast and variable nature of the cloud, Finance teams are now able to align product-oriented budgets and actual cloud spend to appropriate high-level cost structures; cost centers, business units, etc..

Through this evolution, we have improved the prediction, tracking, and overall understanding of cloud costs across Finance, Product, Cloud, and Engineering teams, instilling key FinOps principles across the organization.

Empower Cloud Engineers with Cost Conscious Decision Making - Mike Routier (Choice Hotel International)
Through various system streams expanding our cloud footprint, we needed to improve spend awareness and curb cloud sprawl for effective cost saving decision making.  Via infrastructure enhancements, cost reporting expansion from engineers through Cost Center owners, and celebrating cost savings achievements we were able to achieve the savings milestones we were seeking. With these infrastructure automation features in place; we could focus on improving spending habits through spend awareness campaigns.  From the improved tagging compliance, AWS Waste ownership was identified, resolved, and celebrated improving our culture of cloud cost conscious decision-making.  The key to maintaining these strides is recognize cost savings and even more important, cost avoidance achievements.
